Jeanne Socrates aboard S/V Nereida Visits Port Nikau

Last month, Port Nikau had the privilege of hosting renowned British yachtswoman, Jeanne Socrates. Celebrated for her contributions to sailing, Jeanne visited our marina for minor maintenance as she continued her fifth solo circumnavigation of the world.

Jeanne began her sailing career at the age of 52 and has since set multiple records. She currently holds the title of being the oldest person to sail solo nonstop unassisted around the world via the Southern Ocean’s Five Great Capes. At age 77, she became the first woman to achieve a solo nonstop circumnavigation from North America.

During her stay at Port Nikau, Jeanne took advantage of the on-water maintenance berth to have her mast removed and repaired while arranging other minor repairs to her vessel, S/V Nereida.

Jeanne shared her appreciation for the facilities and the setting of Port Nikau. “There are beautiful views here at Port Nikau, it’s been a pleasure to stay. It’s a great place to rest, recharge and service my boat before I head off on my next adventure,” she said.

Beyond the physical amenities, Jeanne was impressed with the local community and resources. The close proximity to world-renowned boat builders and marine services made her stay both comfortable and productive.

Jeanne is preparing to depart for Australia and is looking forward to speaking at a conference organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), where she will share her vast experiences and insights into solo circumnavigation. Her stories are not only a testament to her spirit but also serve as inspiration for both seasoned sailors and aspiring adventurers. Safe travels, Jeanne!
