Port Nikau Strengthens Connections in Tahiti

Port Nikau’s Marine Manager Blair has just returned from two marine industry events in Tahiti, French Polynesia. There he built valuable new relationships, found promising superyacht opportunities, and increased international awareness of Whangārei as a premier marine destination.

Held from 2 to 7 July at Marina Taina, the NZ Marine Superyacht Function brought together superyacht captains, chief engineers, yacht agents, and representatives from the New Zealand marine industry. The event provided an opportunity to promote Port Nikau and discuss upcoming refit schedules, maintenance requirements, and vessel movements.

Throughout the event, Blair met with captains and crew to showcase the expertise available in Whangārei, reinforcing our region’s reputation as one of the Pacific’s leading refit destinations.

Building a Strong Pipeline

The visit resulted in key superyacht opportunities, with discussions progressing on future refits, maintenance projects, and marina stays, bringing significant potential work over the coming 12 to 24 months.

Blair also caught up with Victor from Outremer Catamarans. They confirmed that the upcoming Outremer Rally has selected Whangārei as its Christmas layover destination, with 28 catamarans expected to arrive.

Welcoming More Cruising Yachts to Whangārei

Following the superyacht function, Blair participated in the Tahiti Moorea Sailing Rendez-vous. This is an annual three-day event that gives a warm Polynesian welcome to cruising sailors and celebrates their successful ocean crossing.

The event began with the Tahiti to Moorea Race, attracting a fleet of 38 blue-water cruising yachts before moving into destination marketing, networking activities, and workshops covering cruising routes, immigration procedures, and destination services.

Overall, the Tahiti visit significantly increased awareness of Port Nikau and the wider Whangārei marine industry within the South Pacific cruising and superyacht community. With numerous follow-up discussions already underway and many opportunities developing, the visit has laid the foundations for continued growth in the region’s marine sector.
